Matthew Henry (1662 - 1714), the Prince of Bible expositors, has an accessible style with a proliferation of pithy phrases and proverb-like sayings. George Whitefield recorded in his journal in 1738: 'Had this sentence out of Henry much pressed upon my heart to comfort me in my retirement, "The mower loses no time whilst he is whetting his scythe." Spurgeon stated, "Every minister ought to read it entirely and carefully through once at least."
The author has read Henry's entire exposition over about 35 years and extracted a selection of memorable quotes accompanied with a useful topical index, which will be a great help in sermon preparation and personal study.

Born in Bristol, Nigel came to Aberystwyth as a believer and mature student in September 1965 to read Chemistry at the University. He was President of the Christian Union from 1970-71, obtained a PhD in Analytical Chemistry in 1976, and worshipped at Alfred Place Baptist Church under the ministry of Pastor Geoff Thomas. He is married to Eileen, a graduate in Welsh, and they have two grown-up children, also believers, and three grandchildren. He recently moved to be near the family and attend St Mellons Baptist Church, Cardiff, under the able ministry of Andy Christofides. His hobbies include reading, woodturning, crosswords and digital photography.
